Award season may be over in Hollywood, but things are starting to heat up across the pond. The nominations for the BAFTA TV Awards are finally in, with the final season of The Crown leading the way with eight nods, followed by Black Mirror with seven.

The Crown didn’t make it to the best drama series field, losing the nomination to The Gold, Happy Valley, Slow Horses, and Top Boy, but that didn’t stop it from topping the list of nominees.

It scored four nods in the acting field, thanks to the amazing performances of its stars Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville, and Salim Daw. It’s also one of the main contenders in the craft categories with four additional nods, such as best costume design, makeup and hair design, sound, and special effects.

As for Black Mirror, Netflix’s anthology series owes its seven nominations to the final Season 6 episode “Demon 79”. It’s one of the contenders for best limited drama, while its leading lady Anjana Vasan secured a nomination for the best leading actress.

The 2024 British Academy Television Awards winners will be announced from the Royal Festival Hall in London on May 12. BBC One will handle live broadcast and they’re yet to announce this year’s host.

The BAFTA Awards returned to London on Sunday night, and gave us another night to remember, especially for the Oppenheimer team. Christopher Nolan’s latest film stole the show at this year’s ceremony and walked away with seven accolades, including the best film prize.

Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things were also in the running for best film prize at this year’s BAFTAs, but none of them could stand their ground to Oppenheimer. After years of failed attempts, Christopher Nolan also managed to win his first BAFTA for the best director.

Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. both collected acting accolades for their roles in this atomic bomb epic, which also came out victorious in three technical categories: best cinematography, editing, and original score.

Poor Things was also among the biggest winners of the night with five awards, including the best actress trophy for its leading lady Emma Stone. Despite its huge success, this film failed to come out victorious in the outstanding British film category, losing out to The Zone of Interest.

The 2024 BAFTA Awards winners were announced from the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 18, with David Tennant serving as the first-time host.

BAFTA voters have shown a lot of love to All Quiet on the Western Front this year and awarded it with a total of seven trophies. In addition to topping the list of winners at this year’s ceremony, the German anti-war drama also walked away with the best film award.

All Quiet was competing against The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Tár, but the tough competition didn’t stop it from coming out victorious. This doesn’t come as a shocker since BAFTA voters made it clear they have a lot of love for this film when they gave it 14 nods—a record-breaking number for a non-English language film.

Edward Berger won the best director award for his work on this film, defeating the Daniels and Martin McDonagh. All Quiet came out victorious in five more categories: best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best original score, best sound, and best film not in the English language.

The list of major winners also included The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis, with four awards each. Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy defeated the likes of Aftersun, Living, and Empire of Light to be named outstanding British film.

The 76th British Academy Film Awards were held on February 19 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond hosting for the first time.

The Power of the Dog picked up countless shiny trophies this awards season, and it walked away with a few more at the BAFTAs. The critically acclaimed western won the award for best film, but Dune was the biggest winner of the night with five awards in the craft field.

Jane Campion’s latest film had to face tough competition in Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it eventually came out victorious. Campion also collected the award for the best director, becoming the third woman to do so.

Dune came into the night as the top nominee with a total of 11 nods and managed to win trophies in five different technical categories—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

Will Smith cemented his status as the front-runner for best actor, after winning another award for King Richard. The award for best actress went to the underdog Joanna Scanlan for After Love. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) increased their Oscars chances after dominating supporting categories at another awards show.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards were held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 13th, with Rebel Wilson serving as a host.

This year’s Oscar race is nearing its final stage and the majority of the award shows that lead to it are already behind us. The BAFTA Awards are the latest ceremony to take place, with Nomadland topping the list of winners and taking home the best film award.

Nomadland managed to beat the likes of The Father, The Mauritanian, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 in the best film category. It scooped additional three awards—best leading actress (Frances McDormand), best director (Chloé Zhao), and best cinematography (Joshua James Richards).

Anthony Hopkins pulled a major upset in the best leading actor category with The Father and became the oldest person to win this award. He was joined by Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) who picked up the trophies for their supporting performances.

The list of major winners also included Promising Young Woman with two awards, including outstanding British film. The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Soul, and Sound of Metal also picked up two awards each, mostly in technical categories.

This year’s BAFTA Awards took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 10th and 11th, with the majority of winners and nominees tuning in virtually from their homes.
