Jake Gyllenhaal and Antoine Fuqua already proved they’re a match made in heaven while working on Southpaw, and they’re getting ready to join forces again. Gyllenhaal will play the lead role in Fuqua’s upcoming project The Guilty.

Based on the critically acclaimed Danish film Den Skyldige, this intense thriller takes place over the course of a single day and centers on a dispatch call operator who finds himself in a difficult position after answering an emergency call from a kidnapped woman.

Gyllenhaal’s production company Nine Stories bought the American rights for this film all the way in 2018, but it took some to get it off the ground and find the perfect director. “I couldn’t be more excited to work with Antoine again. Our time together on Southpaw was one of the great artistic experiences of my career, and I cannot wait to be back on set with him again. The Guilty is a special story, and one that we all feel very close to,” said Gyllenhaal in a statement.

The script for the project was written by Nic Pizzolatto, and it’s expected to start shooting this November in a single location in Los Angeles.

Neither can we.

Before Ang Lee signed on as director of the Oscar-winning picture, Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot director, Gus Van Sant was approached to direct the project.

Now, Van Sant revealed just how difficult it was to cast the 2005 picture, with many prominent actors turning down the chance to star in the film about two gay cowboys who start an affair behind their wives, backs.

Talking to IndieWire, the 65-year-old filmmaker said, “Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

Both Heath and Jake were nominated for Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, at the Academy Awards, while the film ended up winning Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for Lee.
