Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy announced on Thursday that they’ve started working on a sequel to the live-action family comedy and that the original filmmakers would be returning with Jeff Fowler directing and Pat Casey and Josh Miller writing the script.

No casting decisions or production date have been decided on yet, as the film is still in the development stage.

Producing the film are Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara and Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller are executive producing.

The first film was released back in February and it’s based on the popular video game franchise from Sega. It tells the story of the world’s fastest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) work together to save the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Sonic the Hedgehog was the No. 1 opening weekend of all time for a movie based on a video game and it had the fourth-best Presidents Day weekend debut. The film was among the many released early on home entertainment due to the coronavirus.

Multiple outlets confirm that Sonic the Hedgehog is getting an early release on digital. News that the film based on the Sega video game character will be available for early digital release was announced by the studio on Friday. 

The film joins other titles with short theatrical releases made available to watch early in the home including Onward, I Still Believe, The Way Back, Birds of Prey, Bloodshot, Trolls World Tour and The Invisible Man.

Sonic the Hedgehog heads to VOD on March 31.

The film follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz), the world’s fastest hedgehog, and his best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), as they try to save the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Sonic the Hedgehog is expected to break the record for the best video game feature adaption, currently held by Legendary/Warner Bro’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which brought in $54.3 million in three days. Sonic the Hedgehog slightly trailed, making $53.99 million in three days.

Even though the film’s release was delayed because of the backlash from fans about the look of Sonic, and the decision by Paramount and director Jeff Fowler to re-design the character, reviews have so far been positive.

With Paramount confirming that it will be making a movie about the lightning-quick hedgehog, the studio has now announced that his voice will be provided by Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation.

The film has been in the works for quite a while as it was originally set to be produced by Sony before they let the rights lapse. The project was then picked up by Paramount.

Kidding star, Jim Carrey, has already signed on and will play the role of mad scientist, Doctor Eggman Robotnik — Sonic’s arch enemy.

The blue hedgehog will have help from his friends who will be portrayed by Westworld actor, James Marsden, and The Have and the Have Nots actress, Tika Sumpter.

Sonic the Hedgehog, which is the debut feature film of Gopher Broke director, Jeff Fowler, and will feature both live action and CGI, will speed onto screens on November 15 2019.

Carrey has been focusing on his other artistic pursuits lately, so acting had to take a back seat. Criticizing his own movie didn’t do him any favors and that’s just what he did before Kick-Ass 2 came out. The Dumb and Dumber star said he “cannot support that level of violence” and refused to promote it. All of his movies flopped after that and Sonic the Hedgehog will be his most solid shot at redemption.

Carrey played a couple of colorful characters in his day, so it’s not difficult to picture him as a mad scientist hell-bent on world domination. His casting shows promise, but fans of the game are worried, nevertheless. This is the first time in history someone tried to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the big screen. The movie will blend both live-action and CGI, so it’s hard to say if it will work out or not. It certainly seems like a game changer, but we won’t know for sure until it premieres in November next year.
