The Power of the Dog picked up countless shiny trophies this awards season, and it walked away with a few more at the BAFTAs. The critically acclaimed western won the award for best film, but Dune was the biggest winner of the night with five awards in the craft field.

Jane Campion’s latest film had to face tough competition in Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it eventually came out victorious. Campion also collected the award for the best director, becoming the third woman to do so.

Dune came into the night as the top nominee with a total of 11 nods and managed to win trophies in five different technical categories—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

Will Smith cemented his status as the front-runner for best actor, after winning another award for King Richard. The award for best actress went to the underdog Joanna Scanlan for After Love. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) increased their Oscars chances after dominating supporting categories at another awards show.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards were held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 13th, with Rebel Wilson serving as a host.

The Power of the Dog was one of the front-runners since the beginning of the awards season, and it’s living up to the hype. The list of contenders for the Academy Awards is in, and the critically acclaimed western drama is leading the way with 12 nominations.

Jane Campion scored three nominations as producer, screenwriter, and director of The Power of the Dog, and made history as the first woman to ever receive a second directing nomination. This is also the first film by a female director to receive over ten Oscar nominations.

The entire principal cast of this movie is in the running for acting awards in their respective categories, including Benedict Cumberbatch for best actor, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee for best supporting actor, and Kirsten Dunst for best-supporting actress.

Dune is closely behind with 10 nominations, including best picture and a series of additional nods in technical categories. Belfast and West Side Story are in third place with seven nominations, starting with the best picture. The list of additional contenders in the main category also includes King Richard, Don’t Look Up, CODA, Drive My Car, Licorice Pizza, and Nightmare Alley.

The 94th Academy Awards are set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27th, and the host is yet to be announced.

Only a few days after a private Golden Globe ceremony, the award season is heating up with the announcement of SAG Awards nominees. House of Gucci and The Power of the Dog are leading the way in the movie field, while Ted Lasso and Succession scored most nominations in the TV categories.

House of Gucci has proved as a surprising favorite with the members of the Screen Actors Guild. Lady Gaga and Jared Leto received nominations for their individual performances, and they’ll be competing for the biggest awards of the night—an outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture—with the rest of their co-stars.

Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, and King Richard are also in the running for this award, but The Power of the Dog was shockingly left out. It owes its three nominations to its stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Ted Lasso and Succession are obvious favorites in the TV field, with five nominations each. Netflix’s smash hit Squid Game, Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show, and HBO mini-series Mare of Easttown are right behind with a total of four nods, while Only Murders in the Building received three.

SAG Awards will take place on February 27th, with a live broadcast on TBS and TNT.

The Golden Globes were held privately without any celebrities in attendance this year, but that didn’t stop Hollywood’s biggest stars from collecting shiny trophies. The Power of the Dog and West Side Story were the biggest winners of the night, while Succession dominated the TV categories.

The Power of the Dog topped the list of nominees with seven nods and eventually walked away with three accolades. In addition to winning one of the biggest awards of the night, best motion picture – drama, it also scooped the awards for best director (Jane Campion) and best-supporting actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

It was also a good night for Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, which managed to beat the likes of Don’t Look Up and Licorice Pizza to win the award for the best motion picture – musical or comedy. Its stars Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose collected acting awards in their respective categories.

When it comes to the TV field, Succession was the only show to walk away with three awards—best drama series, best actor in a drama (Jeremy Strong), and best-supporting actress (Sarah Snook). HBO Max series Hacks collected the award for best comedy series, while The Underground Railroad was crowned as the best miniseries.

The 79th Golden Globe Awards took place on January 9th, without a celebrity host and live broadcast.

The award season is in full swing right now and the announcement of the Oscar nominations is just a month away. It’s pretty clear which movies are front-runners for a nomination at this point and some of them are already available on Netflix including these three.

The Power of the Dog

Jane Campion’s western about a cold-hearted rancher whose life turns around when his brother brings his new wife home is one of the front-runners in this year’s Oscar race. It’s basically a shoo-in for best picture nod and its stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee will most likely be competing in acting categories.

Don’t Look Up

Unlike Adam McKay’s previous films, this satire about two scientists trying to warn humanity of an approaching comet didn’t premiere to rave reviews, but its star-studded cast will most likely get it across the finish line at many awards shows including the Oscars.

Tick, Tick…Boom!

This biographical musical chronicles the early years of Jonathan Larson, best known for his work on the rock musical Rent. Andrew Garfield gave a marvelous performance portraying the troubled artist, and many are predicting he’ll get his second Oscar nomination for this role.

The Critics’ Choice Awards is the latest ceremony to unveil its list of nominees, and some pretty great choices were made. Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story are leading the way, with eleven nominations each.

Both movies will be competing for the best picture, together with Dune, The Power of the Dog, and Don’t Look Up, among others. Branagh and Spielberg also scored nominations for the best director, but they’ll have tough competition in Jane Campion and Denis Villeneuve.

Campion’s The Power of the Dog and Villeneuve’s Dune both scored 10 nominations. They’re closely followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza and Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley with eight nods each, and both are competing for the best director, as well.

The announcement of film nominations comes a week after the critics declared the contenders in the TV categories. Succession led the way with eight nods, while Evil and Mare of Easttown came in second with five each. Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso, WandaVision, and This Is Us are also among the nominees for major prizes

The Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on January 9th, 2022 with Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer hosting the festivities.

Both of these movies are in the running for Golden Globe’s biggest honor—best motion picture – drama. CODA, King Richard, and Dune are also competing for this award. Belfast and The Power of the Dog will be going head to head in several more categories, starting with the best director and best screenplay.

Don’t Look Up and West Side Story are the main contenders in the comedy categories, with five nominations each. They’re both nominated for the best motion picture – comedy or musical, together with Cyrano, Licorice Pizza, and Tick Tick Boom.

When it comes to the TV side, Succession topped the list of nominees with five nods—including the best drama series. The Morning Show was right behind with four nominations, while Ted Lasso is leading the comedy field with four nods.

The Golden Globe Awards are set to take place on January 9th, 2022 and the HFPA is yet to share details about the ceremony’s format.

We can always count on the Golden Globes to kick off the awards season, and they’re going to do just that in less than a month. The list of Golden Globe Awards nominations is in, and the poignant dramas Belfast and The Power of the Dog are leading the way with seven nominations each.
