The SAG Awards came back to honor the best film and TV performances of the past year on Sunday night and brought a few surprises our way. CODA pulled a major upset and managed to win the award for the best acting ensemble, while Succession and Ted Lasso dominated the TV categories.

CODA was facing tough competition in the main field, with Belfast, Don’t Look Up, The House of Gucci, and King Richard also in the running. It managed to beat them all, winning the trophy for the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

It was also a big night for the supporting actor Troy Kotsur, who gave CODA its second win. When it comes to the rest of the winners in the film categories, the list included the best actor Will Smith (King Richard), best actress Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), and best-supporting actress Ariana DeBose (West Side Story).

Succession and Ted Lasso came back to dominate the TV field, winning best ensemble awards in their respective categories. Hit Netflix drama Squid Game also had a big night, winning a total of three awards—best actor and actress in a drama (Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-Yeon), and best stunt ensemble.

If we had to pick the most popular new TV show of 2021, Squid Game would take the cake, and its future is looking bright. The series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently revealed he’s discussing Season 2 and 3 with Netflix.

The Korea Times recently discussed the show’s future with Dong-hyuk and he stated, “I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

Squid Game was originally envisioned as a one-season show, and Dong-hyuk didn’t have a sequel in mind when he first made it. His plans change after the series became a global sensation, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, with 142 million households reached.

Dong-hyuk changed his tune after the show found immense popularity and left people asking for more. Netflix is yet to confirm its renewal, but it’s likely that Lee Jung-jae would reprise his role of Gi-hun if the show returns for another season.

Squid Game premiered on September 17th, 2021, and became the top-viewed program in 94 countries following its release. It centers around a group of people in deep financial debt who agree to take part in a series of games with deadly consequences for a chance to win an enormous fortune.

Squid Game grew into a global phenomenon since its launch on Netflix last month, and it easily broke one of its most important records. With 111 million views since its debut, the Korean survival drama scored the biggest launch in the history of this streaming service.

Bridgerton previously held the record as Netflix’s biggest series with 82 million households reached within its first 28 days, but Squid Game easily surpassed it. It attracted 111 million viewers around the world since it premiered on Netflix on September 17th.

Squid Game follows a group of individuals who agree to compete in a twisted take on games from their childhood, in the hope they’ll earn enough money to pay off their debts. The games that seem innocent at first quickly turn out to have deadly consequences, and they’re left fighting for their survival.

Due to the show’s enormous success, rumors of Season 2 have been circling around for a few weeks, but nothing has been confirmed just yet. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, discussed the potential follow-up with Radio Times and said he has “a rough framework” and many ideas for Season 2, but he’s not rushing it because he doesn’t want to let viewers down.
