The Witcher became one of Netflix’s biggest hits since premiering five years ago, but its final chapter is on the horizon. The streaming giant renewed the epic fantasy series for its fifth and final season, while also announcing that Season 4 kicked off production.

The Witcher creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissric said it’s a huge pride to star shooting the penultimate season of this series with some new additions to the cast.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends,” said Schmidt Hissrich in a statement.

The Witcher will undergo several major changes when it returns for its fourth chapter. This will mark the first season without Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia after he decided to exit the series and let Liam Hemsworth take his role.

Co-leads Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan will return as Yennefer and Ciri, while the supporting cast includes Joey Batey, Mimî M. Khayisa, Anna Shaffer, Royce Pierreson, Wilson Mbomio, Mahesh Jadu, plus Laurence Fishburne joining the series as the fan-favorite character Regis in Season 4.

Netflix gave The Witcher an early Season 4 renewal, but with one major change. Henry Cavill announced his exit from the acclaimed epic fantasy series and Liam Hemsworth is now set to take over from him and play Geralt of Rivia in Season 4.

Cavill released an official statement announcing his exit, where he reflected on the time he spent playing Geralt of Rivia and wished Hemsworth the best of luck taking over from him.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf,” said Cavill.

Hemsworth is best known as Gale Hawthorne from the Hunger Games movies, and we’ve recently seen him star in Netflix’s Isn’t It Romantic. He said he’s “over the moon” to play Geralt of Rivia and honored that Cavill handed him the reins.

Cavill’s departure from The Witcher comes shortly after it was announced he’ll return as Superman in the DCU. We’ll still see him play Geralt in Season 3 of The Witcher, set to premiere on Netflix sometime next year.

The Witcher has announced who will be taking on the role of Eskel in the new season.

The news comes following Thue Ersted Rasmussen’s departure from the series. Rasmussen was forced to quit due to complications caused by the pandemic.

Rasmussen had already appeared in scenes that were filmed earlier in the year but unfortunately, these will need to be redone with the new Eskel actor. Today, it was revealed that Basil Eidenbenz will be the man taking on the role. You may be familiar with Eidenbenz if you are a fan of the drama series The Athena or Victoria.

When announcing his departure from The Witcher, Rasmussen said in a statement, “it’s heartbreaking, of course, but I mostly feel happy and grateful for the days I got to spend on set earlier this year. Everyone was extremely engaged and passionate about the project and it was a truly inspiring experience.”

The Witcher will return for season two in summer/fall 2021.

Netflix announced that The Witcher: Blood Origin, a limited series set in The Witcher universe is in the works.

The prequel will be “set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time—the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one,” according to the official synopsis.

Declan de Barra, a writer on the first season of The Witcher, will serve as executive producer and showrunner. The Witcher’s executive producer and showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, will executive produce the prequel series.

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin,” said de Barra. “A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books: What was the elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall.”

“I am so thrilled to collaborate with Declan and the Netflix team on ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin.’ It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand the Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more,” Schmidt Hissrich added.

The series will shoot in the UK and a specific date and cast details haven’t been set.

Season 2 of The Witcher starring Henry Cavill, is scheduled to resume production in August.
